Dr. John Weiter is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist with expertise in vitreo-retinal surgery and ophthalmic pathology. He specializes in diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, retinal detachment surgery, vitreous surgery, diagnostic retinal disease, and retinal inflammatory disease.
Education, Training and Past Affiliations
Dr. Weiter earned a Medical degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His residency was completed at the University of Chicago. A vitreo-retinal fellowship was completed at the University of Chicago and an ophthalmic pathology fellowship at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. Dr. Weiter was past Director of Research at the National Naval Medical Research Institute and past director of research at the Schepens Eye Research Institute (Harvard Eye Research Institute). He was director of the Retina Service at Tufts University and Director of Ophthalmology at the Veterans Administration Hospital (Jamaica Plain). He was past president of the Massachusetts Society of Eye Physicians and Surgeons. He was a past member of the Macular Society, Vitreo-retinal Society and American Academy of Surgery.
Current Affiliations
Dr. Weiter is an Associate Clinical Professor at Harvard Medical School. He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Retina Society. He is a senior surgeon at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and a senior scientist at the Schepens Research Institute. He is director of a vitreo-retinal fellowship training program. He has published extensive clinical and research papers as well as books and book chapters.
