Blade-free LASIK is the most advanced method of laser vision correction available today. This all-laser approach not only reduces complications but enhances safety and improves accuracy giving patients greater potential to achieve excellent results.
To best understand the benefits of this new technology, it is important to know that LASIK is a two step process. In the first step, a small flap is created in the outer covering of the cornea. The second step, involves the use of an excimer laser to reshape the cornea and correct vision inaccuracies. In a conventional LASIK procedure doctors use a handheld instrument known as a microkeratome to manually cut a flap in the cornea. While LASIK complications are relatively rare, they are most often associated with the oscillating blade used with traditional microkeratomes.

However, with IntraLase or blade-free LASIK a special laser is used instead of a blade to create the flap. The IntraLase not only creates a uniform flap every single time, it drastically allows for a wider range of candidates to qualify for the surgery. In fact, due to the increase in safety with this technology the United States Navy recently announced that they will allow eligible sailors and marines to receive what they are calling the “Cadillac of Vision Enhancement Surgery” free of charge. The IntraLase blade-Free laser emits a cool laser light that passes harmlessly through the surface of the eye to a pre-determined point in the cornea. The laser produces a layer of tiny bubbles which gently lift and separate the tissue to create a corneal flap.
Once the flap is made, an excimer laser is used to re-shape the cornea. After the laser vision correction is complete the surgeon will move the flap back into place where it reseats in the cornea without the need for stitches.
