LASIK (conventional LASIK)

LASIK eye surgery Boston

The LASIK procedure detailed on this page is both safe and effective. Many patients are not comfortable with the fact that a fixed surgical blade is used to create the flap in the cornea.

For this reason Dr. Nielsen and The Nielsen Eye Center prefer the all laser Intralase Lasik procedure, which is entirely blade free.

Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, or LASIK for short is the method of using cool gentle beam to reshape the cornea to eliminate or reduce the need for glasses or contacts. Since approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) LASIK has become the predominant Refractive Surgical procedure of choice. To date over 2 million LASIK procedures have been performed in the United States.

As a testament to the acceptance of LASIK’s safety, numerous professional athletes and public figures have had the procedures. These include Tiger Woods- professional golfer, Regis Philbman-talk show host, Jessica Simpson-actress/musical entertainer, Cindy Crawford-model and actors Brad Pitt and Dennis Quaid to name a few. Obvioulsy these individuals livelihood depends on clear vision.

In fact, LASIK’s popularity has grown so much that a recent report in ophthalmology times indicates that LASIK wil soon eclipse cataract surgery as the most common surgical procedures in the United States.

Laser Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis, or LASIK, is the Food and Drug Administration approved method of using a cold, gentle beam to reshape the cornea and eliminate or reduce the need for glasses or contacts. Since approved by the FDA in the early 1990’s, LASIK has quickly become the most common elective medical procedure in the country. To date, over 2 million LASIK procedures have been performed in the United States.

All-Laser LASIK

Dr. Nielsen provides a completely customized, blade-free LASIK procedure for every qualified patient.

LASIK surgery works by sculpting the cornea in a precise manner to correct refractive error (nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism). By changing the corneal shape, light becomes focused on the retina, allowing clear vision.

LASIK is a two-step process. Using a blade-free technique with the IntraLase FS laser, the first step is to create a very thin flap in the top layer of cornea. During the second step, the doctor folds back the newly created flap, and a very fine, cold-beam laser quickly pulsates on the underlying corneal tissue in a precise manner, specifically executed for a patient’s individual prescription. The flap is then folded down into place where it reseats in the cornea without the need for stitches or eye patches.

Each patient’s corneal curvature and prescription combination is different, much like a thumb print. By using our advanced technology, Dr. Nielsen is able to target specific areas of the cornea, resulting in a completely customized LASIK procedure.

The laser that reshapes the actual cornea is used for approximately 10 seconds, depending on your prescription. The entire process from start to finish takes approximately 10 minutes.

The IntraLase Method

IntralaseThe IntraLase Method™ is a 100% blade-free approach to corneal flap creation—the critical first step in the LASIK procedure.

Unlike other procedures, the IntraLase Method creates the corneal flap by applying tiny, rapid pulses of laser—not a metal blade (microkeratome)---to the cornea. Each pulse of light passes through the top layers of your cornea and forms a microscopic bubble at a specific depth and position within your eye that is determined by the doctor. As the IntraLase laser moves back and forth across your eye, a uniform layer of bubbles forms just below the corneal surface. Your doctor creates the corneal flap by gently separating the tissue where these bubbles have formed.

IntralaseBecause of the unique way in which the IntraLase Method creates a precisely positioned layer of bubbles just beneath the surface of the eye, it creates a smooth, even surface after your flap is lifted. The corneal flap is then folded back so the doctor can perform the second step of your LASIK treatment.

Using the latest IntraLase FS laser technology, your corneal flap can be made quickly—in only approximately 15 seconds per eye. Including preparation time, the entire LASIK procedure takes approximately 10 minutes. Once the entire procedure is completed, the corneal flap created with the IntraLase Method “locks” back into position.

Allegretto Wave Eye-Q Excimer Laser System

At The Nielsen Eye Center, we believe that technology should be a major factor when choosing a laser vision correction center. Our patients receive the utmost care and precision from the latest technological advancements available today.

The Allegretto Wave Eye-Q Excimer Laser System provides customized treatment to the patient’s individual prescription and cornea while aiming to improve what nature originally designed. This Wavefront Optimized treatment considers the unique curvature of the eye, preserving quality of vision and addressing the spherical distortion that may induce glare and affect night vision.

What this means is that we can treat a broader range of patients with myopia, hyperopia and mild to severe astigmatism faster and more efficiently while minimizing halos, glare and affected night vision; ultimately providing the patient with a positive experience and quality vision.

"Since age six I've worn glasses and contact lenses. I was the guy who couldn't see the 'Big E' on the chart. Finally, I heard about PRK about 10 years ago. I immediately investigated only to be disappointed to learn that my vision was well beyond the possibility of correction through PRK. When LASIK was approved, I was ready in a heartbeat…and couldn't be happier with the results. I see clearly….no need for contacts or lenses and wholeheartedly endorse and recommend the procedure to all my friends and associates. For me the entire process has been a dream come true."
