-->The need for near vision lenses is almost universal for people as they enter middle age. As we mature, the natural lens in our eye becomes firm, enlarged, and loses flexibility. This naturally occurring event decreases the ability of the natural lens to vary its shape for different ranges of focus. This condition is known as presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) and is most often first detected in people between 40 and 50 years of age. A sure sign of presbyopia is when you cannot read without holding the item far away from you. Distance vision remains relatively unaffected by presbyopia.

Monovision LASIK eye surgery is an effective way to treat presbyopia and may relieve the necessity of wearing reading glasses and bifocals.
During the monovision LASIK procedure, one eye is permanently corrected for distance vision, while the other eye is permanently corrected for near vision. Because the dominant eye is treated for distance vision, the brain is easily able to compensate for the two different levels of correction.
-->As with any type of surgery, monovision LASIK has some potential problems associated with it. Your eyes are designed to work together to focus on objects and monovision may interfere somewhat with depth perception. Also, monovision eye surgery can cause reduced peripheral focus in certain circumstances, such as when glancing quickly at the rear-view mirror in a car.
Potential patients are encouraged to first try monovision with contact lenses to determine whether problems might occur.
For presbyopic patients who can tolerate monovision lenses, monovision LASIK is quickly becoming a preferred solution to correct age-related farsightedness and to provide independence from reading glasses and bifocals.
