If you or your child has poor eyesight and dream of seeing with near 20/20 vision without having to use glasses or contacts, you may benefit from the ease and convenience of using Ortho K lenses as a natural and comfortable vision correction treatment. Daily use of eyeglasses or contact lenses can be frustrating and inconvenient. Glasses can easily be misplaced, scratched, or fall off of your face while exercising or playing sports. Contact lenses can cause dry eyes and irritation, tear, and cannot be worn while swimming underwater. Let’s face it; glasses and contacts can be very annoying and can often simply get in the way. Perhaps you or your child are just not quite ready for a surgical solution like LASIK, but you wish you could ditch the glasses and contacts for something better. If so, Ortho K from our experienced eye doctors at Nielsen Eye Center may be just the solution you have been looking for.
What Are Ortho K Lenses?
Ortho K lenses are worn while you sleep and are designed to gently reshape your cornea. When you wake up, you can remove the lenses and should be able to enjoy clear vision for the rest of the day, with freedom from glasses and contacts. In addition to temporarily restoring eyesight, Ortho K can also be beneficial for preventing or slowing the progression of myopia, otherwise known as nearsightedness. Maximum results from myopia prevention is typically seen in children.
Am I A Good Candidate?
We recommend children ages 6 to 18-years-old who currently wear or need glasses as the best candidates since they have the most to gain from Ortho K for myopia prevention. We also recommend Ortho K therapy for athletes, patients with dry eyes, and patients who are frustrated with soft contact lenses or glasses but would like a non-surgical alternative to LASIK eye surgery.
We typically do not fit anyone under 6-years-old or over 60-years-old for Ortho K. We generally fill prescriptions up to a -6.00. People with corneal irregularities or patients who have an extremely high prescription strength are usually not candidates for this treatment method.
What Can I Expect?
Just wear your Ortho K lenses while you sleep, and after just one night, you should see improvements in your vision by the next morning when you wake up. Most people typically experience results that last between 24 to 48 hours after removing Ortho K lenses. The effects are generally reversible once you discontinue use of the lenses.
While most patients do not experience side effects, the risks of using Ortho K lenses are similar to those of regular soft contact lens use. If worn as directed and regular follow-up appointments with your eye doctor are maintained, you should continue to see well.
