Intralase In Bostonin Boston, MA

The Nielsen Eye Center is proud to be one of the first practices in the Boston area to offer IntraLase LASIK. Approved by NASA to correct vision for its astronauts and the United States Department of Defense for its Air Force and Navy pilots, the IntraLase LASIK procedure is one of the most exciting developments in bladeless laser vision correction.

What is IntraLase?

Traditionally, LASIK was performed using a combination of laser energy and a handheld device called a microkeratome, an oscillating razor blade that could create a corneal flap. IntraLase is a computer-guided laser that can more precisely create a corneal flap according to specific measurements, leading to better outcomes. In fact, IntraLase uses a unique inside-out method to create a flap using an infrared beam of light. Focused on a precise point within the central layer of the cornea, it creates strings of microscopic bubbles that define the flap’s dimensions and width, as well as create a beveled edge, allowing the surgeon to lift and replace it with precision. In all, the process takes less than a minute.

The Benefits of Bladeless LASIK

Unlike traditional LASIK procedures which use a blade to create a corneal flap, the IntraLase method uses a laser to produce a layer of tiny bubbles, which gently lift and separate the tissue to create a corneal flap. The custom Allegretto Wave Eye-Q Excimer Laser technology then reshapes the underlying cornea. Once the flap is made and the cornea reshaped, the surgeon will move the flap back into place, where it resets in the cornea without the need for stitches. This combination of two advanced technologies has produced some of the best results we’ve ever seen in laser vision correction. Our team strives to provide each of our patients with safety and comfort, and therefore strongly believe in the numerous advantages of the IntraLase method of LASIK surgery, including:

  • Reduced anxiety associated with surgical blades
  • Increased flap predictability
  • Reduced risk of dry eye after surgery
  • Precise and even corneal flaps
  • Reduced recovery time

How Effective is IntraLase LASIK?

In a research study of patients treated with one eye using traditional LASIK, and the other eye using IntraLase LASIK, patients preferred the vision in their IntraLase eye 3 to 1 over the traditional LASIK eye. In addition, published results of Wavefront-guided procedures have reported improved contrast sensitivity and fewer higher-order aberrations, compared with standard treatment.

Some examples in more practical terms of how this would help would be an improved ability to read a road sign in a fog or more easily recognize a face in a crowd. The Wavefront-guided procedure results in a higher quality of vision. At the Nielsen Eye Center, we believe it is critical to have the most advanced LASIK technology for our patients – therefore, we use both technologies, the IntraLase bladeless laser to make the corneal flap and the custom Allegretto Wave Eye-Q Excimer Laser technology to reshape the cornea.

IntraLase LASIK Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is IntraLase LASIK Safer Than Traditional LASIK?

Yes, IntraLase LASIK is widely regarded as safer than traditional LASIK due to its use of a precise, computer-guided femtosecond laser instead of a handheld microkeratome blade. This technology minimizes human error, reduces the risk of flap complications, and creates a more uniform corneal flap for better outcomes. At Nielsen Eye Center in Quincy, MA, weve seen fewer side effects and higher patient satisfaction with IntraLase - ideal for those concerned about precision in blade-free LASIK surgery. Studies from leading eye health organizations support this, noting up to a 30% lower complication rate with femtosecond lasers.

How Does IntraLase LASIK Differ from Traditional LASIK?

The key difference lies in flap creation: Traditional LASIK relies on a mechanical microkeratome (a razor-like blade) for the corneal flap, which can introduce variability. In contrast, IntraLase LASIK at Nielsen Eye Center uses a high-speed femtosecond laser controlled by advanced computer imaging for unparalleled accuracy—down to microns. This makes IntraLase suitable for patients who may not qualify for traditional methods, such as those with thinner corneas or higher prescriptions. Its a game-changer for custom LASIK in Bostons South Shore, offering personalized results tailored to your unique eye anatomy.

How Long Does the IntraLase LASIK Procedure Take?

The IntraLase LASIK procedure is quick and efficient, typically lasting 10 minutes or less per eye at our Quincy or Weymouth locations. The femtosecond laser creates the corneal flap in just 15-30 seconds, followed by the excimer laser reshaping your cornea for vision correction. Most patients are in and out within an hour, including prep time. Our South Shore team prioritizes comfort with numbing drops and mild sedation - perfect for busy professionals in Norwood or Norwell seeking minimal downtime for LASIK eye surgery near me.

Who Is a Good Candidate for IntraLase LASIK?

Ideal candidates for IntraLase LASIK are adults over 21 in good overall health, with stable vision prescriptions (no major changes in the past year) and no advanced eye conditions like severe dry eye or keratoconus. Its especially beneficial if youre not a fit for traditional LASIK due to corneal thickness or other factors. At Nielsen Eye Center, we start with a comprehensive evaluation to assess refractive errors like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. If youre active in South Shore sports or tired of glasses for Quincy commutes, IntraLase could be your path to freedom - contact us for a candidacy screening.

What Is Recovery Like After IntraLase LASIK?

Recovery from IntraLase LASIK is remarkably swift and comfortable. Many patients notice improved vision within hours, with full stabilization over 3-6 months. Expect to return to work or light activities in 1-2 days, though youll avoid rubbing eyes, swimming, makeup, or heavy exercise for the first week. Mild discomfort like dryness or light sensitivity is common but managed with prescribed drops. Our Quincy-based patients love the quick turnaround - sharper sight without the long healing of other procedures. Follow-up visits at our Norwell or Weymouth offices ensure optimal results.
