Incredible breakthroughs have been made in the technology surrounding LASIK procedures. Modern-day research and development have enabled ophthalmologists worldwide to improve the consistency of LASIK surgery results while minimizing risks. Our eye doctors at the Nielsen Eye Center proactively seek this technology to provide our patients with the highest quality of care with outstanding results. This state-of-the-art facility and equipment provide the comfort and quality of care you deserve.
We offer monovision LASIK, one of the most advanced types of LASIK available. This advanced option can help you see more clearly and is an excellent option for patients who have specific refractive needs from LASIK. You can find it here at the Nielsen Eye Center.
What is Monovision LASIK?
For people over the age of 40 who are considering laser vision correction, monovision LASIK is another option. After the age of 40, we begin to lose the ability to focus the lens of our eyes, resulting in the need for reading glasses. This is not caused by disease or illness – rather, it’s just a natural part of the aging process.
When the ability to focus is lost, the eyes cannot adjust or focus images at different distances. This issue is called presbyopia. Bifocal glasses are usually prescribed to correct this, enabling vision to be acceptable for both distance and near vision. Presbyopia can also be corrected with monovision LASIK, something not achievable with standard LASIK vision surgery. In this laser procedure, one eye is corrected for distance and one eye for near vision. This produces the ability to see both up close and far away at the same time as your brain adapts to the different distances at once.
Are You A Candidate for Monovision?
Monovision LASIK is ideal for patients with presbyopia who no longer want to rely on reading glasses. Many other LASIK requirements apply, such as being in good health, being at least 18 years of age, and having no significant eye disorders or conditions that might impact the safety of your procedure. Our team will discuss your candidacy during a consultation at our LASIK eye center.

To determine if monovision LASIK is the right procedure for you, our eye doctors will first have you wear a contact lens that corrects for reading vision in one eye and distance vision in the other eye for a week. If you’re comfortable with the adjustment of using one eye for distance and one eye for near vision, then your LASIK surgeon will proceed with monovision LASIK.
Monovision LASIK is typically performed the same as standard LASIK except that different corrections will be performed on each eye. A flap is created in the corneal tissue through which the laser will reshape and correct the eye to correct for refractive errors. Once complete, the flap seals down and begins to heal after you go home.
When choosing a LASIK surgeon, it’s important to not only be confident that their skills and experience meet your high standards, but that the equipment they use is cutting-edge technology. The technologies used at the Nielsen Eye Center are best in class to ensure you get the best results possible.
