Are You a LASIK Candidate?

LASIK is one of the most popular vision correction treatments available. This advanced laser procedure has helped people all over the world reduce – and even eliminate – their dependence on glasses and contact lenses. The only way to accurately determine if LASIK is a good option for you is to be evaluated by one of our experienced eye surgeons. There are a few basic candidacy requirements that all individuals must meet before  LASIK vision surgery can be performed Here is a detailed guide to getting started with LASIK in Boston at the Nielsen Eye Center. We offer a complimentary consultation with a board-certified ophthalmic surgeon.

LASIK Candidates

You’re a good candidate for LASIK if:

You are at least 18 years old

You have had a stable vision prescription for one year or longer

You are in relatively good overall health

You have corneas that are thick enough to undergo the procedure

You do not currently have certain eye diseases, including glaucoma or cataracts

LASIK Alternatives

It’s important to remember that many patients qualify as candidates for LASIK; however, for those who do not, there are a variety of alternatives to LASIK that can provide many of the same benefits. These alternatives can include options such as:

  • PRK
  • Implantable Collamer Lens (ICL)
  • Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE)

Frequently Asked Questions

Are you awake during laser eye surgery?

You are awake, but comfortable through the use of pre operative oral medication and topical numbing drops.

Can eyes get worse after Lasik?

Generally speaking, no, eyes do not get worse after LASIK as a result of LASIK. Changes can occur long term in your vision due to age related causes that are not expedited by LASIK.

Can I do lasik twice?

LASIK is generally done once, and then if an enhancement is needed in the future, this can be achieved by using the flaps already created from your first procedure or through flapless LASIK/PRK on top of your previous procedure.

Can I watch TV after Lasik surgery?

You can, but it is recommended to rest your eyes as much as possible, especially the day of the procedure and the following few days.

Can laser surgery correct astigmatism?

Yes! It is a common misconception that laser correction surgery cannot treat astigmatism, but in fact it can treat significant levels of astigmatism.

Can you be too old for Lasik eye surgery?

Although there is no “best age” to get LASIK, there may be an age at which your eyes may benefit from a different procedure to get out of glasses or contacts. This is where the free consultation comes in handy.

Can you get laser eye surgery if you need bifocals?

Yes, you can! You should schedule a free consultation to see what your options would entail to enhance your distance and/or reading vision.

Can you go blind from Lasik?

Many people wonder, is LASIK safe? Theoretically, any eye surgery has the potential risk of blindness, infection, or the need for an additional procedure. However, this is extremely rare and not at all commonly seen with the high-end technology that is now available, especially at our practice.

Does laser surgery leave scars?

Your eye provider may be able to tell you had LASIK in the past by seeing the faint borders of a previous flap on your corneas under the microscope, but generally no there are not visually significant scars left after this procedure.

Does Lasik last forever?

LASIK lasts as long as it takes for age-related changes to occur, such as presbyopia (needing reading glasses) or cataracts. LASIK does not increase the rate or chance of these changes happening. Majority of patients enjoy decades with their LASIK, but this of course depends on the age at which a patient gets LASIK.

How can I improve my night vision after Lasik?

Not all patients have difficulty with night vision after LASIK. This is more commonly seen right after the procedure when the eyes are still healing, which is why we generally recommend frequent lubrication to assist with these symptoms.

How do I know if Im a candidate for Lasik?

Give us a call and schedule your free consultation. It is only with several measurements, photos, and a complete exam that we can ensure you would be a great candidate!

How many days rest is required after Lasik surgery?

There is no specific amount of days required of rest, but definitely rest the day of the procedure when you get home and take it relatively easy the following few days.

Is 55 too old for Lasik eye surgery?

Not necessarily. It is very possible that a 55-year-old can get LASIK, but this would depend on the specific patient and what we find during the first consultation at our LASIK vision institute.

Is laser vision correction surgery safe?

Laser vision correction is incredibly safe and controlled, especially when the most advanced laser correction technology is used, which we are proud to offer.

What happens if you blink during laser eye surgery?

At our LASIK eye center, we use a small device to prevent your eyelashes and eyelids from interfering with the laser. If you do blink, it will not change anything for your procedure.

Whats the worst vision that can be corrected?

Patients who are often legally blind without glasses or worse than 20/400 (cannot see the big E) can be corrected.

Who can have laser vision correction?

Patients who have stable eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions tend to be the best candidates. We ensure the integrity of a patients eyes through several parameters during the consultation process that we will review with you.

Is LASIK painful?

During LASIK surgery, the eye will be numbed with a local anesthetic so you will not feel any pain. However, you may experience pressure and minor discomfort.

Does insurance cover LASIK?

LASIK eye surgery cost is not typically covered by insurance since it is considered an elective procedure. However, some employee health plans offer some coverage for LASIK costs so we recommend that you check with your employer.

YOUR VISION IS OUR MISSION

Dr Nielson and his staff were very professional and made it comfortable to have cataracts surgery. I was having so much trouble seeing even with my glasses on. and One week after getting the second eye done, I think I have 20/20 vision. People are shocked to see me without glasses and the colors of the world have come back to life. Everything is vivid and colorful. I’m so grateful for Dr Nielsen and his team! Highly recommend. Getting Started With LASIK

If you are considering LASIK eye surgery, we suggest scheduling a complimentary pre-operative evaluation to determine if you are a candidate. You may also complete our LASIK Self-Evaluation quiz online, and one of our patient advocates will contact you to discuss arranging your complimentary V.I.P. consultation.

The complimentary pre-operative exam at the Nielsen Eye Center is a thorough eye exam designed to carefully screen patients to determine if they are qualified for LASIK. It includes evaluating your corneas, your overall eye health, and your LASIK candidacy. Our practice is a state-of-the-art laser facility, utilizing some of the best diagnostic equipment available. If you are searching for options to correct your vision and diminish your reliance on corrective eyewear, now is a great time to schedule a complimentary consultation and find out if LASIK is the best treatment for your needs.

How to Choose a LASIK Surgeon

It’s always best to spend significant time researching a chosen provider for any kind of eye procedure. The Nielsen Eye Center recommends the following guidelines if you are looking for LASIK surgery success rate:

Get Recommendations and Referrals

To find a LASIK surgeon, obtain referrals from other doctors you trust or from other patients who have had a laser vision correction procedure.

Ask About Complication Rates

Once you narrow down your choices, request information about the doctor’s complication rates. For many of the top surgeons, the rate is typically under 3 in 1,000. If the doctor you are considering will not tell you their average complication rate, look elsewhere.

Choose a Reputable Doctor

Be sure to choose the doctor, not the laser center. It’s important not to base your decision on a fancy advertisement for a laser facility. Inquire about who will be performing your procedure and request information about their credentials, training, experience, and board certifications.

Look for Board Certification

It’s best to choose an eye doctor who is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology. This achievement indicates that the surgeon has passed strict board certification examination requirements and is committed to adhering to a comprehensive code of ethics.

Look for Experience

A laser vision correction surgeon who has performed at least 4,000 LASIK surgeries is often preferable. This ensures they have the extensive experience necessary to produce safe and long-lasting results.

Avoid Cheap LASIK

Be cautious about advertisements proclaiming large discounts or “low-cost” LASIK surgery price. Always pay attention to the doctor’s level of qualifications and experience because the potential for saving money is not worth the risk of low-quality care. At our office, we can discuss LASIK financing in greater detail during your consultation.

Ask About Sanitary Measures

It’s best to ask about measures the doctor and practice take to prevent infection. A facility with a dust-free or sterile operating room should be a high priority. Request information to ensure that disposable parts are not reused and that your eye and all surgical instruments are thoroughly sterilized before your procedure to ward against the risk of infectious disease transmission.

Avoid Pushy Practices

If you feel pushed into having a procedure or that a practice is using “hard sell” tactics, it’s best to look elsewhere. This process should not feel like you are buying a car.

Have Realistic Expectations

Remember to have realistic expectations. LASIK is a revolutionary procedure that has helped millions of people reduce and even eliminate their need for corrective eyewear; however, each patient is different and will have slightly different results. Be wary of doctors who promise perfect 20/20 vision.

Stay Positive

With that in mind, don’t forget about all the potential benefits that come with LASIK surgery. Many people across the globe have had a lifetime of fuzzy vision corrected in what often amounts to a quick, five-minute procedure. LASIK is an advanced treatment that can have positive effects on your livelihood for years to come and finally allow you to see more clearly without heavy dependence on glasses and contacts.
