OCTA Retina Scan In Bostonin Boston, MA

At the Nielsen Eye Center, your eye health is our number one priority. Our surgeons are skilled in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of eye diseases and conditions, which cannot be accomplished without the use of advanced technology and the latest in vision diagnostic tools.

One piece of technology utilized at the Nielsen Eye Center is an eye-scanning tool known as optical coherence tomographic angiography (OCTA), which is a non-invasive retinal scanning tool used to create maps of the retina. OCTA aids our team in the diagnosis and management of common retinal diseases.

What is the Retina?

The retina is a critical component of the eye. This thin layer of light-sensitive tissue contains cells that trigger nerve impulses that are sent to the brain, allowing us to process a visual image. In fact, the retina is actually considered brain tissue and is a part of the central nervous system.

Keeping the retina healthy is very important to maintaining clear vision. Because the retina is susceptible to various conditions and diseases, we recommend all of our patients stay on top of routine eye care. This is the best way to effectively diagnose retinal problems.

With any retinal disease, early diagnosis is very important to disease management and preventing permanent damage to the eye. With regular eye exams and the availability of advanced imaging technology like OCTA, the Nielsen Eye Center can provide outstanding retina treatment to our patients.

When is OCTA Used to Diagnose Retinal Conditions?

The retina is essential to clear vision and overall eye health. Your eye doctor may recommend a diagnostic retina exam if abnormalities are detected during your routine eye exam, or if you are at higher risk for retinal diseases due to family history, medications, or pre-existing conditions.

The retinal imaging provided by OCTA technology has proven useful in the evaluation and diagnosis of multiple retinal conditions, including:

  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Glaucoma
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Retinal vascular occlusions

With many retinal diseases, accurate and early detection allows the team at the Nielsen Eye Center to better manage the progression of the disease and provide effective treatment options.

How Does OCTA Angiography Work?

OCTA technology helps eye care professionals examine the blood vessels in the retina. OCTA scans are non-invasive and require no intravenous dye injections, which are typically used in fluorescein angiography scans.

Utilizing dyes can be time-consuming, invasive, and has the potential to cause allergic reaction. OCTA technology provides a faster, safer alternative for evaluation and treatment.

The OCTA device uses infrared laser light to scan the eye and create high-resolution, 3D images of individual layers of the retinal vasculature. This allows our eye doctors to isolate areas of interest or abnormality and assess structural changes in the retina that occur as a result of retinal diseases and conditions.

Repeating the process over time allows us to monitor changes to patients’ overall retinal health and to check on any progression of the deterioration of blood vessels in the back of the eye.
