Refractive Lens Exchange In Bostonin Boston, MA

Refractive lens exchange is an advanced alternative to traditional laser vision correction. With a variety of benefits, our team at Nielsen Eye Center can help you explore this flexible and customizable option.

What is Refractive Lens Exchange?

Refractive lens exchange (RLE) is sometimes called clear lens extraction. It’s similar to the techniques used in cataract surgery and has the goal of replacing the natural lens of the eye with an implantable intraocular lens (IOL). Although it does not completely rely on laser technologies like LASIK, it can produce long-lasting results with a wider array of customizable options.

Am I A Good Candidate for Refractive Lens Exchange?

Refractive lens exchange is a great option for many patients who aren’t good candidates for other procedures. Because it replaces the natural lens of the eye, it can correct all types of refractive errors with a specialized IOL. It can be especially beneficial for patients in their 40s and beyond because it can achieve multifocal vision and prevent the need for cataract surgery later on.

The Benefits of Refractive Lens Exchange

One of the shortcomings of laser vision correction such as LASIK is the inability to correct more than one refractive error at a time. For example, if you have trouble reading and seeing far away, a multifocal IOL can be an all-in-one solution. Some of the additional benefits of refractive lens exchange include:

  • Can be an option for patients with thin corneas
  • Multifocal premium lens options
  • Adjustable results with future procedures
  • Prevents cataracts
  • Long-term, significant vision improvement
  • Treats all types of refractive errors

After implanting an IOL, you will no longer need glasses or contact lenses to see. In short, refractive lens exchange can transform your vision permanently and allow you to live with perfect vision.

The Refractive Lens Exchange Procedure

Refractive lens exchange is similar to cataract surgery. Performed by our qualified and trained eye surgeons, it can be completed in about 15-20 minutes. You will be given anesthetic eye drops so you won’t feel anything during the procedure. Once you’re ready, a tiny incision (about 2.5-3mm in length) is created with the guidance of a powerful magnifying microscope. Then, the natural lens of the eye is removed and the IOL is inserted. IOLs are completely undetectable and function just like the natural lens of your eye. Once both eyes are treated, you can return home for your brief recovery.

Refractive Lens Exchange Recovery

Some patients see improvement in their vision almost immediately after surgery. However, it’s normal to have some blurriness and fluctuations in your vision as you recover. Healing typically takes 1-2 weeks in total but you may return to normal activities within 24 hours. You’ll be given specialized eye drops to use during this time, as well as detailed recovery instructions, and you will follow up with our team to ensure you’re healing correctly. By the time of your follow-up, you should be seeing clearly.
