Will I Need to Be Awake During LASIK Laser Vision Correction?in Boston, MA

Many individuals simply tire of dealing with the hassle of glasses and contact lenses, ultimately considering LASIK laser vision correction to help them see without the need for corrective eyewear. However, some people have some anxiety about the surgery itself; after all, the fear of having something come anywhere near the eyes is a common one. With that in mind, many patients wonder whether general anesthesia during the LASIK procedure is necessary or advisable.

Typically, general anesthesia is not administered during LASIK. The fact is that the procedure often takes just 10 minutes or less to complete, with the laser portion of the procedure usually taking just seconds for each eye. Numbing eye drops are applied just before LASIK surgery that can help patients experience a virtually painless treatment. Remember, LASIK is a very quick procedure. With advanced technologies available at The Nielsen Eye Center, it can even be performed as an all-laser LASIK treatment – i.e. there is no need for a surgical blade to come near the eye. Many of our patients are quite pleasantly surprised at how easy and comfortable the treatment experience really is!
