When is an Eye Injury an Eye Emergency?
An eye injury becomes an eye emergency when it involves:
- Severe pain
- Sudden vision loss
- Significant vision distortion
- The presence of foreign objects
- Exposure to harmful chemicals
Symptoms such as unequal pupils, swelling, severe redness, or a sudden increase in floaters or flashes of light also signal the need for urgent care.
Urgent Conditions
Urgent conditions that will be seen within one to two hours of checking in include:
- Sudden loss of vision or vision distortion
- Sudden onset of flashers and floaters
- Only one droopy eyelid and unequal pupil sizes
- New and ongoing Double Vision that disappears when you close one eye
- New redness, especially if severe and associated with pain
- Redness with pain
- Severe pressure with headache, nausea, red eye, and blurred vision
- Severe pain and swelling
Non-Urgent Conditions
Though important, non-urgent issues do not typically pose an immediate threat to your vision. Non-urgent conditions that will be scheduled for a later date include:
- Ongoing eye floaters
- Vision slowly getting worse
- Ongoing redness for weeks/months
- Redness without pain
- Double vision that remains after closing one eye
- Droopy eyelids
- Mild pressure
